Hello Singapore! We working on a number super cool community projects here on my team and we sure can use your help to make Southeast Asia's online experience even better. We put together our first "sChallenge" (not the best name... we're working on it) and here it is.
Challenge -
Write and document some snippet of code to:
- Build a list of WiFi access point around you
- Build a list of GSM cell towers around you
- Pass these lists to some sort of server (web service or http post).
This needs to be done for a few Windows Mobile and a few Nokia mobile devices.
Prize -
The first people to get us the code with comments wins this:
- XBOX 360 with 4 controller and HALO
- 32" Philips LCD TV
We'll send a camera crew by to video you presenting your code snippets to share with the people of Singapore and SEA.

Wow! Considering I work at Microsoft, there are tons of things that happens here that I don't know about and I get WOW-ed by. Check this out on MSDN... we've got development and security experts making 20 min videos on developer security topics.
This week's featured video - How to add security to .NET apps by encrypting sensitive / confidential data by using the "ProtectedData" class of the System.Security.Cryptography namespace. The author said that at times... all he wants to do is to protect data and he feels this method is the quickest way to get it done.
These videos come in tons of formats including formats for your Ipod, WM device or PSP!

I've always wanted an easy way to integrate .NET and 3D UIs. It always seem to involve hardware and lots of C++. That's no longer the case. Johnny here (Carnegie Mellon) has showed how C# and the Wii remote can make this a reality. We've got lots of fun project ideas. Anyone got a Wii in Singapore?

I've got an app using features of .NET 3.5. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 and deploying to Windows Server 2008 RC0. As you can tell... this post will be very dated as all the stuff I'm using are pre-release. So if you read this and we've gone RTM... these instructions probably won't apply.
One great thing about Visual Studio 2008 is that you can deploy your app directly to your IIS Server very easily and quickly. That's assuming your server has been configured and ready to go. Typically you administrator will do the configuration in prep for your app but incase you don't have one (like me)... these are the steps you take.
We assume the following:
- You have Windows Server 2008 installed (i'm using RC0)
- You have a .NET web app to deploy (mine uses features of .NET 3.5)
- You have admin rights on your server
Here are the high level steps:
- Enable Web and Application Server roles on Windows Server 2008
- Enable FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE)
- I had to install FPSE seperately as it is currently in Beta
- Details and download here
- Enable FPSE on the IIS Web Site in question
- Use the "owdadm -o install" command or
- Use the FrontPage Server (also called Microsoft SharePoint) administration website to "extend" the site with FPSE (the site typically is on port 4425)
- Ensure the user you plan on using for deployment have proper rights
- User account has rights on the server and have NTFS rights to the filesystem where the app will go
- User account has rights in FPSE to do stuff (not sure the exact permission required but I used FULL rights)
- Ensure the target IIS Web Site allows Windows Authentication
That's it. Once this is done to the site, you'll be able to deploy easily in Visual Studio 2008 to your target server.
One of the great parts of this job is getting to meet some super cool people. When I first started here in Singapore about 2 years ago (yes... it has been almost 2 years), the previous evangelist gave me a list of 3 people to connect with and one of them was a guy named Boon at a hoster called 8 to Infinity. My interaction with Boon was among one of my first taste of "Singapore efficiency". As I needed his help with setting up my blog and hosting for our local community user groups, I allocated a few weeks to get it done as I thought there would be a lot of back-and-forth (based on my experience back home with hosters in Australia and the US). Well, about 3 days later... my blog was up and I was lock-n-loaded to execute on behalf of my local user group. Most of the delay was on my end as I take a while to get to my emails.
Well, recently... I needed Boon's help to troubleshoot some issues I had with Sky Drive's iframe rendering on Community Server. All my support requests were acted on within minutes. Singapore rocks! Boon... you rock!
Anyhow, this isn't really a technical post but rather... I wanted to publicly thank Boon and 8 to Infinity for being so supportive. I love you guys. xoxo

During this week's MSDN TechTalks, I showed a 15 min demo where I built a website from scratch that allows the user to type in their Singapore postal code and a Singapore map shows up with a pin on top of the postal code (every postal code represent a distinct building unlike others where the code can specify a geographical region).
This demo has resonated quite well with the attendees at the event. A number of them wanted to see the code so they can build a "here are my stores" map and embedded into their web sites. As such, I just recorded a video of me doing the exact same demo but with more commentary of my code. Here's my video and a copy of the resulting code from the video demo.
The Postal2Gps web service used is a web service we built to wrap a raw JSP service from Best.SG. You need to sign up for a developer ID from Best.SG to make use of their service. The web service wrapper we used will be updated by the end of Oct to allow you to type in your own developer ID.
